THE QUESTION IS ALWAYS THIS: WHO IS THE JANE DOE?
the jane doe is an anonymous female party, oftentimes an already dead one. we don't know anything about her other than what she looked like, whether she was a hooker or not, and clues on how she met her GRISLY END. this means that the jane doe could be anyone or anything. but it could be said that the jane doe is also a nonentity to herself. i mean, all girls lucky enough to be beloved get their names printed by the people who notice them missing, don't they? so allow me to rephrase the question with some suspension of belief. ... WHO WAS JANE DOE?CALAMITY DOE-LARAN WAS BORN IN BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA——— she does not know this.
she does not know who her parents are or where they went. she doesn't even know her own birthday. what she does know, however, is that the first thing she really remembers is loitering outside a gas station in arequipa, peru at the ripe age of seven. from there, she was taken in by a lovely newlywed couple from the united states with nothing better to do than backpack all across south america. they wanted to adopt her, but before they could, the child (who refused to give them a name to call her by) fled from their care.THE NONENTITY CHILD, WE'LL CALL HER, LEARNED HOW TO GET BY.
responding to any moniker given to her, she spent her youth and teenage years in her own makeshift foster care system, jumping from big-hearted families to... lesser pleasant families, never staying in one place for too long. at age fourteen, she began dabbling in drugs, and by age sixteen, she was selling them for suppliers hook, line, and sinker to local secondary prep students. a respectable hustle, yeah? well, when she was nineteen, she realized pole was an increasingly lucrative endeavor as well. these jobs together made it so she was able to live fully on her own—— so she does, journeying to the states for a fresh start.ONE NIGHT, A WOMAN IS MURDERED IN AN ARIZONA MOTEL ROOM.
the nonentity girl, laying on the floor and battling a severe depressive episode, listens to it happen through the wall. it shakes something in her. if she wants to survive in this town, she'll have to crawl out of the grave she's already halfway stuck in. after thorough questioning from the police, she walks barefoot to a corner store and buys three things: cheap blonde hair dye, a bus pass, and a pack of marlboros. then, a second woman is murdered—— and the nonentity girl is never seen again.SHE DUBS HERSELF CALAMITY DOE.
the "laran" came later when the name needed a little more spice. see, calamitous is the only word she thinks fully describes her. she'll dance at a club for a few months, work her way up to the top, and then find a rich scumbag who doesn't deserve their cash to seduce and steal from. after making her fair share of enemies in one place, she flocks to another by any means necessary and repeats the process. sometimes this involves getting a short-term roommate in a city she's never heard of, other times it means posing as a groupie so a band will take her cross-country.BUT THIS BARELY ANSWERS THE QUESTION, RIGHT? ———
allow me to put it this way: this jane doe is sunshine with a touch of hurricane. she gives herself a name so you won't fucking call her jane doe when her bad choices inevitably catch up with her. actually, she's got a million different names depending on where you go and who you ask. this is what keeps her from becoming a nonentity to herself. if she isn't living like she's already dead, she doesn't know who the fuck she is.which leads us to our final question, one that you'll have to figure out on your own——— WHO IS CALAMITY DOE-LARAN?
GENERAL VERSE(S) NOTES
IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT IN CALAMITY'S "MAIN" STORY, she does end up dead at the end (murdered, to be more exact, at a fairly young age). this is subject to change depending on specific dynamics and plots, but more often than not, she cannot be saved.
00 : A GIRL SHAPED HOLE IN REALITY
this is before calamity doe-laran was calamity doe-laran. instead, this arc stars THE NONENTITY GIRL. a nameless figure who has just left mexico for america in search of new clubs to dance at. she is a beginner and she isn't here to make friends. she ends up living with jimmy vincent, a violent drug dealer who vows to give her a roof under her head. when she finds herself bored of him, however, he threatens to kill her, and she runs. her life ultimately reaches a catalyst when, while staying in a motel during an intense BPD episode, the woman in the room next to hers is brutally murdered. this inspires the nonentity girl to kill herself--- but not in the way one would think. instead, she buys a bottle of cheap blonde hair dye and becomes CALAMITY DOE, erasing all aspects of her former self.

01 : BLESSED BE THE CREATURE WHO SHEDS HER SKIN
the newly dubbed CALAMITY DOE is a fresh face on the stripping scene. thanks to her infectious energy and strong persona, it takes no time for her to work her way up to the top of every club she works in-- often to the dismay of her fellow dancers. still, calamity marches to the beat of her own drum. she never stays in one place for too long, paranoid that jimmy, an unfortunate reminder of her past life, will find her and make her pay for setting out on her own.
02 : JUST LET THE LIGHTS BLEED ALL OVER ME
no longer a beginner in the industry, calamity starts to seek out corrupt, wealthy patrons to seduce and steal from. immediately after doing so, she continues her pattern of relocating and starting up at a new club to avoid persecution. though she claims to live carefree of others, the more terrible people she meets, the more susceptible she is to getting attached to the good ones-- something that doesn't bode well for her lifestyle. the glittery sheen over her eyes begins to blind her. and to make matters worse... jimmy finally finds her, forcing her to open a dark floodgate and shoot him out of self defense.
03 : YOU'LL SOON BE COMPOST
calamity's reckless lifestyle finally begins to catch up with her. the number of places she can safely go dwindles with every crime she commits. she begins to take riskier jobs prostituting herself, all while suffering from extreme drug withdrawals and worsening (undiagnosed) BPD symptoms. the feeling of invincibility she's been carrying since her early days as CALAMITY DOE fades as fate encroaches on her, forcing her to admit that maybe she will no longer be able to outrun death. in verses where she cannot be saved, this arc ends with her body being discovered in a trash can outside a landromat on the cali-nevada border--- unidentifiable. a broken wikipedia link. a cautionary tale.
